Sunny Side, Porthclais is comprised of acrylic paint on canvas with the addition of a subtle
texture medium providing greater depth to the foliage and cliffs. Whilst exploring the area I
was first inspired by the transit of light across the valley, then noticing its interaction with
the ebbing tide, to offer the viewer a temporal grounding from which to perceive the ever-
changing coastal scene.

Compositionally, I was excited by the opposing angles – the bend in the river, the reaching
branches, the path and the geometry of the valley itself. These elements, sometimes
parallel and sometimes perpendicular, led my attention through the scene towards the
tempting line of sea to which I was headed.
